Nurse Becky Lou Ruiz  needs donations of the following items for
her clinic:

  • Belts, rolls of wide ribbon (makes a nice girl belt in a pinch)
  • Basketball type shorts with elastic waist
  • T-shirts that pass the dress code
  • Healthy snacks such as peanut butter crackers, pretzels,
cereal bars, granola bars (boy moms only at this meeting, as
    her storage space is limited)
  • Tampons (variety pack of Playtex or Tampax is best; pads
are not needed, she has a good supply)

Often, Nurse Ruiz is able to help our kids avoid a detention by
providing longer shorts, a different shirt, or a belt.

The snacks are for kids who come in with a stomach-ache;
frequently, she finds they just skipped breakfast.

The tampons are for the restroom within her clinic.  Girls with
feminine bathroom needs often ask teachers for a pass to see
Nurse Ruiz, then help themselves to products in her bathroom.
No questions, no embarrassment, sounds like a great system to
me.

If you can donate any of these items to the clinic, please bring
them to the next PTA meeting on September 8 in the library.

Nurse Ruiz will be offering DT (Diptheia/Tetanus), Hepatitus A & B
immunizations on
September 26 7am-12pm.  Many 8th grade students need
the DT before being admitted to high school.  She has a current list of
students that need the shot in the clinic.  If parents would like to take
advantage of this on site immunization, one parent needs to be present
with the child.  Any questions, ask Nurse Ruiz. 713-365-5400
Open Letter from our 8th Gr Principal regarding an important health issue:
"We have been hearing multiple reports that (some of) our eighth grade students have been
playing the
pass out game.  We had one eighth grade boy on Wednesday pass out, fall on his
face, and subsequently incur multiple facial abrasions.  This is a serious matter which has led to
fatal incidents in different parts of the country.  It is imperative that our school and community work
together to monitor, educate, and prevent this behavior from continuing.

This article seems to address this issue:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8995984/  Apparently, it
can escalate from doing it to yourself, to a friend assisting, and even cases of using a belt, chain or
some other external device.  We will have all seventh and eighth grade activity teachers share this
information during activity period today and speak to the severity of this behavior. "
                                                                              Sincerely, Bill Tommaney
